History
However, they had access on the lower floor instead of on the higher mezzanine floor, which made it much easier to use them with a platform height of 550 millimeters, which ensured stepless boarding. By installing external sliding doors, it was possible to dispense with door pockets and simplify the box construction. The transition between these wagons is at the normal car floor height, as in the case of single-decker cars, which allows for free coupling with other coaches.
These carriages were the forerunners of today’s double-decker carriages with low-floor entrance. Görlitz delivered 672 cars of this type, including 100 control cars. From 1986, the new vehicles were delivered with disc brakes. The double-deck single carriages are still in use today, in multiple conversions, in the S-Bahn networks and regional rail lines, mainly in the new federal states.
Maintained mainly in their original state, they were repainted over the years in ‘Sandgelb’ and ‘Sputnik’ paint schemes, in the 90s being lightly modernized and moved under Deutsche Bahn ownership painting them in ‘Mint grün’ paint scheme.
In 1972, before the mass producing of these coaches, two prototype cars were also made in the usual ‘Mustard’ paint scheme, respectively in white-blue paint scheme, but with red and yellow doors which was meant to help the passengers find the entrances easier. These coaches were liked especially by children, who almost every time wanted to travel on the upper deck of the car.
The control cars were built in the same period between the 70s and 90s just like the double-deck single carriages. These cars enabled the train to be controlled from either ends making it more efficient to operate in contrast with traditional trains where the locomotive had to be decoupled and re-coupled at the other end.
In addition to the classic green color scheme (1974), the vehicles later wore the white and red Berlin livery and the scheme that led to the nickname “mustard pot” (1974-1979). Later on they were turned into ‘Sputnik’ (1986-1990) and ‘Mint grün’ under Deutsche Bahn ownership which was the protoype for the first stage of modernization.

Schöne Wagen. Als DR-Fan bin ich begeistert. Schade das es keinen Führerstand gibt. Die Umsetzung ist sehr gelungen. Fehlen nur noch die passenden Lokomotiven
