REPAINT MÁV 480-006-0 Szent Márton

This is a repaint on the Bombardier TRAXX BR185.2 electric locomotive operated by the Hungarian National Railway MÁV. The locomotive was delivered to MÁV in 2011 in a classic blue-yellow scheme with a yellow stripe most locomotives have in Hungary and it’s purpose was to replace the MÁV V43 series in domestic intercity services. The current scheme was launched on the 28th of April 2016 as part of the 1700th anniversary of the birth of Saint Martin. After being designed by Grafik Dekor, it took only two days for this special scheme to be applied by Loc & More’s specialists and it consists almost entirely of vinyl decals 20m long and 3m high which are cold, sun and tear resistant for a minimum of 5 years.

The scheme shows the famous tale of Saint Martin of Tours (the third bishop of Tours, born in the year 316.) According to medieval accounts about his life, Martin was a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity after an encounter with a half-naked beggar at the gate of the city of Amiens in northern France. Martin cut his cloak in half in order to share it with the beggar, who that night appeared to him in a dream-vision and revealed himself to be Christ.

At first, the locomotive in it’s current state was deserving intercity trains in Hungary and later also serviced the famous Secler Express, carrying pilgrims to the Csíkszomlyó Pilgrimage in Romania. In recent years, following a deal between the Romanian National Railway (CFR) and MÁV, a number of TRAXX locomotives enter Romania and continue their journey to Bucharest without changing locomotives at the border, which saves up precious time in the tight schedule of these services. The MÁV 480-006 Szent Márton locomotive remains a railway enthusiast’s delight in both countries whenever it appears in a station.
