History
MÁV 480-007-8 II. Rákóczi Ferenc is a repaint on the Bombardier TRAXX BR185.2 electric locomotive operated by the Hungarian National Railway MÁV. The locomotive was delivered to MÁV in 2011 in a classic blue-yellow scheme with a yellow stripe and it’s purpose was to replace the V43 series in domestic intercity services. MÁV-Start debuted this new livery on the TRAXX MÁV 480-007 in 2015. This new design is paying tribute to Francis II Rákóczi who was a Hungarian nobleman and leader of the Rákóczi’s War of Independence against the Habsburgs in 1703–1711 as the prince of the Estates Confederated for Liberty of the Kingdom of Hungary. He was also Prince of Transylvania, an Imperial Prince, and a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Today he is considered a national hero in Hungary.
The black-golden design is depicting the historical role of the Transylvanian prince Ferenc Rákóczi II. and was made for the 280th anniversary of the prince’s death.
The locomotive’s very first journey led to Transylvania, pulling a special train to Şumuleu Ciuc (or Csíksomlyó) all the way to Rákóczi Castle. A journey which is part of a Catholic pilgrimage to this little town in Romania, after which it returned in Hungary to run regularly inside and beyond the borders of the country. In recent years, following a deal between the Romanian National Railway (CFR) and MÁV, a number of TRAXX locomotives enter Romania and continue their journey to Bucharest and even Constanta, without changing locomotives at the border, which saves up precious time in the tight schedule of these services.
